The Buzz | Drafting Class

I was so excited when fellow Calgary interior designer Kevin Gray contacted me and asked if he could tour a class of high school drafting students from Calgary Christian School through our office. They wanted to see firsthand what a busy residential interior design office looked like and learn a little more about how we use technical drafting skills on a daily basis. Every time I speak about my profession to students I am reminded how passionate I am for interior design and how much I enjoy what I do for a living.  I consider myself a very lucky person because for so many it is only a dream to fashion a career out of your passion. What a luxury it is to spend your days doing what you love!! Sharing my experiences with youngsters and providing them with insight into what interior design as a career really invigorates me. So of course, I said we’d be delighted!!

We all squeezed into our resource library and I showed the class some examples of our work and spoke about our projects. I also explained to them how technical our job is and how drafted working drawings are a communication tool that expresses our ideas so that they can be constructed. Many people don’t realize the technical skills or the knowledge of construction details an interior designer must have in order to be successful.  The students asked some great questions and were curious about some of the products like fabric and finishes that we store in our library. It was great fun!

Maybe there is a future architect, architectural technologist or interior designer in this crowd of teenagers!  All of us here at Corea Sotropa Interior Design really enjoyed their visit and hope that we can do it again in the future.

FUN! Drafting was my favourite subject in highschool but we did it all by hand – AutoCad was just coming in. My daughter too drafting last year and HATED the computer aspect of it all, would of rather done it by hand – sad because she would make a great designer or architect and just can’t get past the technology!

Hi Barbara! You know what’s interesting? We use auto cad for our working drawings (blueprints) but still draft perspective drawings by hand as well as sketches to convey our ideas. Sometimes there’s nothing better than drawing by hand! It’s so much more artistic, creative and impressive. So, although the computer drafting tools are necessary, you still have to be competent without this technology. Thanks so much for your comment 🙂

What a great looking library! I took a drafting class in design school and really liked it, although it was extremely tedious. Best of luck to your students!!

What a fabulous idea. There’s nothing like inspiring young people by showing them a successful business firsthand. Lucky them!
