And now for something completely different!
We were so thrilled when a family we worked with previously in Calgary asked us to help create a cozy and comfortable mountain retreat in their newly purchased Canmore get-away. The clients were looking for a complete departure from the aesthetic of their primary Calgary residence and wanted a casual yet elegant space without relying too heavily on a clichéd “alpine” look. We were up for the challenge!
The existing space was builder grade, completely neutral, but had no personality – it was like starting with a blank canvas! We wanted to create a bold visual backdrop behind the furniture, so custom drapery in a vivid pattern was installed throughout the living room and dining nook. We chose to carry the line of the nook drapery across the window wall in the living room, only draping the bottom portion of the wall. This gives our clients privacy, but allows tons of natural light to flood their space.
We think you’ll agree, the results are stunning:
Wanting to incorporate little touches of a traditional rustic ski chalet, we switched the existing nook chandelier with a resin antler fixture. We chose black ladder back chairs to contrast the large amount of natural wood in the space.
The walls were painted a creamy white – Benjamin Moore “Hemp Seed” – keeping the area bright and open, and allowing contrasting colours of furniture and accessories, like the armoire below, to not only “pop” but to practically explode!
A cozy place to curl up après ski was essential. We added this supple brown leather chair and ottoman and anchored it in the corner of the living room with a small gallery wall of original paintings.
The finished product is a comfortable, warm and casual retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. We loved flexing our design muscle out in Canmore and are so happy with the results!
